Autumn is Fr. great time to go outside. In Vermont, the leaves change color, and summer temperatures in West Texas decrease – slightly. In almost every part of the United States it is nice to set up a tent or go hiking in the fall. Just make sure your bed is comfortable and your feet are well cared for when you go out on the trails.

Goose down beats a synthetic insulator in heat per ounce, and its also less. If it weren’t so expensive. The REI home jacket is stolen even at retail prices and is now on sale. The female version is here for the same price.

The merino wool will not feel itchy or sticky on the forehead like synthetic fleece, and the lightweight SmartWool fabric is still warm enough for winter snowshoeing. It’s my choice when I’m cool, from town to mountains.

Even on a day hike in most climates it is good to take a rain jacket. Soaking can lead to hypothermia even in moderate conditions. Rainier is our favorite budget jacket and fits snugly in your left pocket. Check out the male version here.

Quarter socks WrightSock CoolMesh II

Each WrightSock has two layers, and the inner layer slides over the outer to lighten the blisters. Synthetic fabric is thinner and less bulky. There are other versions and lengths. I love WrightSocks and use CoolMesh II for mountaineering.

Woolen socks take away moisture and do not smell. When hiking in cold weather I always bring a third pair of socks for sleep and as a reserve for two other pairs and they are always made of thick Darn Toughs wool. There is also a men’s version on sale.

Buff can help keep hair back and protect neck and chest on sunny days. This one is light enough not to overheat you and has a UPF rating of 50. It is also sold in Backcountry. Check out more of our favorite sun protection clothing here.

If you are in a bear country, you need to cook the food away from the tent, seal the food in a bear-resistant container and throw it far, far away from you. This food stores about enough food for four days. It is also sold in Backcountry.

Mirror compasses weigh slightly more than basic compasses, but they provide greater accuracy. The MC-2 is my favorite full-featured compass. With an adjustable incline and a clinometer (to measure the angle of inclination) you will never have to update the compass again.

Signal mirrors are used to broadcast your position to rescue aircraft if you find yourself in a difficult situation. Just aim it at the plane through the hole in the center. Plus, you can always use a mirror for more mundane needs.

In my guide I gave the best ratings to a classic water bottle. I’ve been using it for almost four years, and other than the very light powder-coated scratches, it’s still like new.

If you’re dealing with backpacks, Grayl is dead, easy to operate, and you don’t need to pack a separate filter and water bottle. Filtration of 99.999 percent of common viruses, bacteria and simple cysts from the water as well as sludge takes less than a minute.

Free up space in the bag by putting a sleeping bag and clothes in one of them. Chinch belts squeeze air, and the whole bag is compressed into a small ball. Just don’t keep your stuff tight for long.

Synthetic sleeping bags dry easier than goose down. It is designed for an optimistic 30 degrees Fahrenheit; it is also sold in REI. You will probably need a bed as well. The lovely Therm-a-Rest Z Lite SOL sells for $ 34, which is $ 12.

The real beauty of camping in a car instead of backpacks is that you can bring proper coffee without sweating. Tell the instant coffee to push away, and instead bring the best grains for a decent cup of real coffee. Pick up a hand-held Hario Skerton Pro coffee grinder ($ 47).
