Goose down beats a synthetic insulator in heat per ounce, and its also less. If it weren’t so expensive. The REI home jacket is stolen even at retail prices and is now on sale. The female version is here for the same price.
Merino wool will not feel itchy or sticky on the forehead like synthetic fleece, and the lightweight SmartWool fabric is still warm enough for winter snowshoeing. It’s my choice when I’m cool, from town to mountains.
Even on a day hike in most climates it is good to take a rain jacket. Soaking can lead to hypothermia even in moderate conditions. Rainier is our favorite budget jacket and fits snugly in your left pocket. Check out the male version here.
Each WrightSock has two layers, and the inner layer slides over the outer to lighten the blisters. Synthetic fabric is thinner and less bulky. There are other versions and lengths. I love WrightSocks and use CoolMesh II for mountaineering.
Woolen socks take away moisture and do not smell. On hikes in cold weather I always bring a third pair of socks for sleep and as a backup for the other two pairs and they are always made of thick Darn Toughs wool. There is also a men’s version on sale.
Buffs are good for everything: from having your hair tied back, don’t wash the dust out of your nose and mouth, and cover your neck and chest on sunny days. If you are in a bear country, you need to cook the food away from the tent, seal the food in a bear-resistant container and throw it far, far away from you. This food stores about enough food for four days. It is also sold in Backcountry.
If you’re dealing with backpacks, Grayl is dead, easy to operate, and you don’t need to pack a separate filter and water bottle. Filtration of 99.999 percent of common viruses, bacteria and simple cysts from the water as well as sludge takes less than a minute.
Not everyone wants to throw water into a package of dehydrated food all weekend. If you want to truly cook, chances are you’ll need a frying pan. Synthetic sleeping bags dry easier than goose down. It is designed for an optimistic 30 degrees Fahrenheit; it is also sold in REI. You will probably need a bed as well. The lovely Therm-a-Rest Z Lite SOL sells for $ 34, which is $ 12.
REI chairs are more durable than most brands of chairs I’ve sat in. This one calls itself a lawn chair, but it’s portable enough for hiking, beach trips, back doors and watching fireworks.

The real beauty of camping in a car instead of backpacks is that you can bring proper coffee without sweating. Tell the instant coffee to push away, and instead bring the best grains for a decent cup of real coffee. Pick up a hand-held Hario Skerton Pro coffee grinder ($ 47).
